Away Rotations
Inpatient Pediatrics.  This PGY1 rotation is done at UNM in Albuquerque.  This is a regional referral center and provides an excellent inpatient experience.  There is a furnished house a short walk from the medical center for our interns.  There is no Family Medicine clinic or call during this rotation, but the resident will be on Pediatric call at UNM.

Rural Rotation.  This rotation in the PGY2 year provides residents the opportunity to experience the practice and lifestyle of family physicians in rural settings.  It may be taken anywhere in rural New Mexico but usually involves the physicians with La Clinica de Familia.  There is no clinic or call during this rotation.  Housing will be provided if the rotation is taken away from Las Cruces.

Electives.  There are three electives in the PGY3 year, one of which may be taken anywhere the resident wishes if he or she has appropriate numbers of deliveries and continuity visits in the clinic.

Call:  There are two residents on call every night—one in OB and one in the ER.  Because of the 80-hour work week restrictions, residents on the FMS service (ER) are required to stay in the hospital only until 10:00 PM at which time they may take call from home.  Residents taking OB call are required to stay in the hospital when they are on-call. We are also asking all residents except those on call or with a continuity OB to not come to the hospital before 7:00 AM.  Anyone approaching the 80-hour maximum should alert the Academic Coordinator or a chief resident.
