General Information
The Southern
New Mexico Family Medicine Residency (aka Memorial Medical
Center Family Medicine Residency, Las Cruces) is a fully
accredited,
three-year
Family Medicine residency sponsored by Memorial Medical
Center of Las Cruces, a LifePoint hospital. There is an
educational affiliation with the University of New Mexico,
but we are the only full three-year, community-based FM
residency in the state. Governorship of the residency is by
the Graduate Medical Education Committee, composed of
members from administration, faculty, the residents, and
community physicians.
The residency
is unopposed and offers a strong and varied experience in
border-related morbidity, obstetrics, and rural medicine.
The Family Medicine Service also covers the Hospitalist
Service, and rounds are done with the Hospitalist and one of
the FM faculty. Residents should expect to cover 5 to 10
inpatients daily each block on the FMS. On the OB floor
residents follow patients from the Ben Archer Health Centers
with the FM faculty, and drop-ins with the Certified Nurse
Midwives of the First Step Women’s Health Center. Procedure
logs are kept on New Innovations, a web-based system for
tracking residents’ experience.
The Family Medicine Clinic has 14 exam rooms and 2 procedure
rooms to provide comprehensive health care to all members of
the community. Each resident will be assigned to a coverage
team but will have his or her own patient panel during the
entire three years of residency. Lab and Xray facilities
are available on-campus at MMC. Plans for the immediate
future include an Electronic Health Record system. Each
resident upon admission to the program is issued a PDA,
computer, and access to Up-To-Date. There is also a library
for hardbound reference materials.
